Some photos from the tourney are getting circulated now. Here is a pic from my last Plan B show in the Semi Final round of Washington Improv Theater’s FIST 2010. I was really proud of the performances we gave throughout and couldn’t have had better teammates. These are my pals Mikael and Jenny.
My improv team, Season Six, asks one member of the audience at the top of the show to describe the last picture they took. We then immediately take shape and play certain objects or persons in the photo and then zoom in on certain details while verbally describing everything we are creating. After we zoom in and out we go back to the original photo for one last freeze frame and button line. Here is a pic of that from the last show of our Spring 2010 run at WIT.
Well, my rag tag FIST team made it all the way to the final 4 of Washington Improv Theater’s Fighting Improv Smackdown Tournament. We lost in the semi-final round to our friends in The Flea Sisters. We were the second to perform in the match and I knew it was all over for us when we got off stage. The Flea Sisters had a great show and they ended with a super fun song to boot. Backstage we congratulated them before the results were read but they weren’t convinced they won yet. We had a packed house of over 100 people and it was hard to tell how you were doing while onstage. One thing was certain, we all wanted to end on a super funny high note. So I suggested that we all do a spit take when the results were read. That way no one gives us sad-loser-sorry-face and six hams get what they really want: one more laugh. Here’s the pic:
Over the last week I’ve been writing and rehearsing sketch material to be debuted at Brightest Young Things: The Family Hemerlein Variety Show on March 25th. I am super excited. Brightest Young Things will be posting an interview of me and Murphy McHugh on Monday so keep an eye out for that. Here’s a blurb from Brightest Young Things:
Secondly, the comedic headliner shall be Brick Penguin, the unofficial sketch comedy troupe of the Washington Improv Theater. Led by Murph McHugh and Tara Maher the head instructors of the WIT’s brand new sketch comedy school, the small band of abstract and cerebral outsiders are bringing to DC the power and innovation of the Upright Citizens Brigade [and] the Second City.
At the beginning of each improv class I tell my students that if they ever feel like their personal space is being invaded that they can yell out a safeword such as “shennanigans” or “umbrella”. I say this of course in jest but then I pause for 30 solid seconds and stare each student dead in the eye to make sure they know that my little joke was IN FACT not a joke. This semester my students chose the word “pineapple”. They are hipper than they realize.
I’m stealing this from Dan’s blog. It’s the high quality soundtrack that tickles me the most.
What: WIT’s FIST Tournament & Season Six performs
Who: Me and other funny people
Why: Life should be spicy.
Promo time. This Thursday night I return to the stage with Season Six at 8pm but not before the first match up of WIT’s Fighting Improv Smackdown Tournament (aka FIST). See that gal in the gold? That’s my pal Karin Hammerberry and this is her awesome blog. The tournament is a ton of fun and hugely entertaining. See my twitter feed at the right for an interview of the two FIST hosts, Aparna Nancherla and Kat Davis on The Mariya Alexander Show.
My team, Plan B (myself, Jennifer Huftalen & Mikael Johnson), doesn’t really have an improv format yet. I think it will be kind of like flying by the seat of our pants but… without pants. The spirit of the Olympics has inspired the three of us and we are passionately aiming for 6th place in the tournament.
And here is a video of the puppy I want:
